ACA income limits for 2027: the poverty level chart, in dollars.

The short answer

For 2027 Marketplace coverage, premium tax credits generally go to households between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level: $15,960 to $63,840 for one person and $33,000 to $132,000 for a family of four. Extra savings on silver plans stop at 250%. These lines use the 2026 HHS poverty guidelines.

What each line means.

IncomeWhat it usually unlocks for 2027
Under 100%No premium tax credit in most cases. In Oklahoma, SoonerCare covers adults to 138%. Texas has not expanded Medicaid, so many adults here fall in a coverage gap.
100% to 138%Oklahoma adults: usually SoonerCare instead of a Marketplace plan. Texas adults: premium tax credit plus the strongest silver savings.
100% to 150%Silver plans with 94% cost-sharing reductions (the richest level). Required contribution as low as 2.15% to 4.30% of income.
150% to 200%Silver plans with 87% cost-sharing reductions.
200% to 250%Silver plans with 73% cost-sharing reductions.
250% to 400%Premium tax credit only. You pay up to 10.22% of income for the benchmark silver plan.
Over 400%No premium tax credit. You pay full price. See the subsidy cliff.

What counts as income.

HealthCare.gov uses modified adjusted gross income for everyone in your tax household: you, your spouse if you file jointly, and anyone you claim as a dependent who has to file. That includes wages, net self-employment income, unemployment, taxable retirement withdrawals, investment income, and all of your Social Security. It does not include child support received, gifts, qualified Roth withdrawals or SSI.

Estimate the whole year, not one month. If you are self-employed or paid on commission, use your best honest projection and update it on HealthCare.gov when it changes.

How the premium tax credit is calculated.

The credit is the difference between the price of the second-lowest cost silver plan in your area (the benchmark) and the amount the law says you should pay, which is a percentage of your income. For 2027 that percentage runs from 2.15% at the bottom to 10.22% between 300% and 400% of the poverty level. You can use the credit on any metal level except catastrophic.

Because the benchmark is priced for your ages and county, two households with the same income can get very different credits. Our cost estimator runs your ZIP code through the federal Marketplace API.

Questions people ask.

What is the income limit for Obamacare in 2027?

For the premium tax credit, generally 400% of the poverty level: $63,840 for one person, $86,560 for two, $132,000 for four. There is no income limit to buy a plan at full price.

Why does HealthCare.gov use last year's poverty guidelines?

Open Enrollment for 2027 happens in late 2026, before the 2027 guidelines are published in January. So 2027 Marketplace savings use the 2026 guidelines. Medicaid switches to new guidelines each year when they come out.

Is the 138% line only for Medicaid?

Yes. It matters in states that expanded Medicaid, such as Oklahoma. Texas has not expanded Medicaid, so in Texas the key lines are 100%, 150%, 200%, 250% and 400%.
