Where the self-employed buy coverage.
- HealthCare.gov individual plans: the only place to get the premium tax credit and cost-sharing reductions.
- Off-Marketplace plans from the same insurers: same rules and networks, no credit.
- A spouse's job-based plan, if one is available.
- If you have employees: an ICHRA or QSEHRA or a small group plan can cover you and them. A business with only an owner and spouse cannot use a small group plan in most cases.
Estimating income when it is uneven.
Use your expected net profit for the year (Schedule C line 31, or your share of partnership or S corporation income), minus half of self-employment tax and other adjustments, plus any other household income. Seasonal or commission earners should look at the last two years and the pipeline, then update HealthCare.gov within 30 days when the picture changes.
Remember that from tax year 2026 there is no cap on repaying excess credit. See paying back the premium tax credit.
The self-employed health insurance deduction.
If you had a net profit and were not eligible for an employer-subsidized plan, you can generally deduct the premiums you paid for yourself, your spouse and dependents. With a premium tax credit, the deduction and the credit depend on each other; IRS Publication 974 has the worksheet to solve for both.

If you travel for work, check whether the plan covers anything outside your service area besides emergencies. Many Texas Marketplace plans are HMOs or EPOs tied to one region. In Oklahoma, PPO plans are still sold. If you want to save pre-tax, pair a bronze plan with an HSA, which every bronze plan supports from 2026.
Questions people ask.
Can I get Obamacare if I am self-employed?
Yes. You apply on HealthCare.gov like anyone else and your credit is based on your household's estimated net income.
Can a one-person business offer an ICHRA?
An ICHRA needs at least one employee who is not an owner or the owner's spouse. Owner-only businesses generally buy individual coverage and use the self-employed health insurance deduction.
